Talk is about the Netflix ecosystem and how Netflix built its massively scalable, highly available and immutable infrastructure that is resilient to hardware and software failures.

Talk Abstract:
Netflix application operates on a diverse range of devices and network conditions across the globe. Performance optimization and end-to-end reliability are critical for delivering quality entertainment to our members span in 190 countries. Netflix cloud-native ecosystem is designed from the ground up to be resilient to hardware and software failures, common occurrences on a public cloud.

Hundreds of microservices and Netflix managed CDN work together behind the scenes in total harmony offering a rich and engaging streaming experience to a growing list of over 150 million paid global subscribers. Microservices rely on caching, replication and persistent tiers for massive scalability and to avert data loss. Netflix’s immutable infrastructure promotes infrastructure-as-a-code methodology, where infrastructure changes are automated and orchestrated via the CI/CD platform that rebuilds the whole environment from scratch and thus prevents any possible configuration drift. New features are rolled out into production frequently and independently via Red/Black deployment, which ensures no downtime and 99.99% target availability. Fault injection and real-world failure scenarios are exercised daily in production for conformance.

Content delivery is optimized by a combination of intelligent caching and encoding recipes that incorporate: device capabilities, title complexity, geographical location, and network bandwidth. The goal is to reduce rebuffer events without sacrificing stream quality. Machine Learning, Big Data analytics, and Real Time stream processing offer unique and timely customer insight that feeds into business decisions. Self-service tooling help teams monitor, debug and diagnose issues well before being reported. All this to keep Netflix binge-watchers enjoy quality content 24×7.

Who Should Attend?
The talk offers unique insight into Netflix microservices that are deployed at a massive scale into an AWS public cloud and Netflix CDN (Content Delivery Networks) for delivering content globally. The talk will benefit those who are interested in:
  • Building scalable and fault-tolerant microservices.
  • Disassembling monolithic application into a set of microservices that can work together but developed and managed independently.
  • Understanding the role of DevOps and CI/CD platform in accelerating engineering velocity and pushing new features into production frequently
  • Knowing the significance of immutable infrastructure
  • Differentiating RESTful service and Netflix “REST-ish” API (Falcor)
  • Netflix caching and persistent tier for stateless microservices.
  • Performing fault injection and conformance testing in production
  • Adaptive Streaming and Machine Learning for efficient content delivery
