Event Details
The World Bank has stated that poverty will not end without financial inclusion. This poses a challenge in Pakistan, especially for women, as only 7% of them are financially included compared to 20% of men. This talk explores the practical application of design thinking in addressing such problems. Bringing first-hand research experience and interactions with women at the bottom of the pyramid throughout Pakistan, the session will share stories, insights and concepts from the project.
The audience will get a glimpse at the different phases of the human-centered design process so they can explore it in their own work for innovative solutions. The talk will show how design thinking goes beyond theory and paper and put to action in the real world, using a financial inclusion project conducted in partnership with IDEO.org.

In the last session, we focused on building teams to effectively achieve objectives irrespective of the job or role assigned to them. This time, we are going to discuss how planning without action is merely a wish. Leadership is not through position but through action. What, when and where to take an action requires knowledge and skills. We will discuss action-centered leadership in building a team.

Leadership SIG series is back with its tenth episode, “Managing the Boss”. In the last session, we focused on how managers need to communicate on three different levels and how to make these communications effective. This time, we are going to discuss the significance of managing one’s relationship with their boss.
It sounds skeptical “to manage your boss” due to our traditional management practices in the organisations. It also sounds unhealthy to think why to manage your boss. But numerous research studies suggest that effective managers take time and effort notably to manage their relationships with their subordinates and also with their bosses as well. In this session, we will explore the difference between a leader, manager and a boss and what are the areas we could
look into developing our relationships with the boss.

Leadership SIG series is back with its ninth episode, “Communicating at Three Levels”. In the last session, we focused on how should one manage oneself, now we are going to discuss the significance of communication skills for a manager.
Becoming a new manager changes their role from contributor to a director and an encourager. Managers generally misconstrue position with authority and start delving in either being aggressive, passive or manipulative. All these traits are generally negatively perceived. The question arises where and when to use and not to use them and what could be the best alternative, we will discuss in this session.

The other database might be a relational database such as MySQL or Oracle; or any NoSQL database such as MongoDB or Hadoop. To achieve this, PostgreSQL implements ISO Standard call SQL-MED in the form of Foreign Data Wrappers (FDW). This presentation will explain in detail how PostgreSQL FDWs work. It will include a detailed explanation of simple features, and will introduce more advanced features that were added in recent versions of PostgreSQL. Examples of these would be to show how aggregate pushdown and join pushdown work in PostgreSQL.
The talk will include working examples of these advanced features and demonstrating their use with different databases. These examples show how data from different database flavors can be used by PostgreSQL, including those from heterogeneous relational databases, and showing NoSQL column store joins.

When we talk of UX the first thing that comes to our minds is a website, a software or a mobile application. But we often forget that user experience is one of the main components of any industry. “People don’t buy products anymore, they buy experiences that are meaningful to them”. Pepsico’s Chief Design Officer.
The behaviors of customers are changing: the way they look at things now is different than 20 years ago. They have so many channels of communication and information that their decisions are being influenced by the current and future trends. In order to stay competitive we have to work along with the user in the design process to address each and every need which increases the chances of our products and services to have a good customer base.

Getting in and staying in the box restricts our perspective and makes us sick, unlikable, and mediocre performer.
We get stuck when we have problems we can’t see. Since we can’t see them, we don’t even know they exist. We mistakenly think the problems are something else, ignoring the real issue. Put yourself in the picture. Since you can only see things from your closed and limited perspective – and since, like most people, you probably resist the suggestion that the truth lies outside of things you’ve considered – you are primarily in a box, that is “cut off, closed up, and blind.”
Are you aware of your shortcomings? Or maybe, the problem is that you don’t know them.
Leadership is AUTHENTICITY, not a STYLE.”
Success and power of influence depends on being out of the box.

Geographical Information Systems (GIS) are being very commonly used in our daily lives. Location-based services with the help of location-aware devises are also on the rise. The need of GIS solutions are pretty much in demand in the local market. PostgreSQL provides a strong back-end GIS support with the help of an extension called PostGIS, that can be used to develop and deploy useful GIS solutions.
PostGIS has the ability to deal with spatial data (both vector and raster). In this session, we will take a look on working of PostGIS. How does spatial data is stored in PostgreSQL tables? What spatial functions are available in PostGIS which can be used in SQL to get interesting results? And finally how PostGIS can connect to well-know open source GIS & Visualisation desktop software such as QGIS.

People don’t fail because they don’t have any goal or a plan. They fail because of wrong strategy or tactics. Leadership is not through position, title, or power but leadership is through actions. Successful leaders know what to do in the times of adversity and prosperity.
Is the leadership being a role model or is it acting before the crisis? Is leadership leading the under performers to peak performance or is it coaching the good to greatness? What is the real leadership?
It’s not what you know but how quickly you learn from others. So let’s learn from the experienced who have established the footprint of success for others to learn in the upcoming OPEN SIG Drive by meeting our worthy panelists “ Mr. Wahaj Siraj CEO of Nayatel, and Mr. Ather Imran, CEO of Sybrid Pakistan”

Commitment, which appears to be a rare commodity found among the employees, invites us to revisit our strategies for employee engagement for boosting the performance. Performance getting through unleashing the potential instead of following the job descriptions needs the team members’ commitment. Commitment ensures success to achieve goals. In present times, getting a commitment is a leader’s biggest challenge because commitment is the result of choice, not circumstances. The difference between someone who’s not engaged vs. someone who is; is similar to the distinction between compliance and commitment. When someone is compliant, they just obey – doing what’s asked of them but no more. Typically they’re doing just enough to keep their job. Conversely, a committed employee will spend time and effort outside of regular business hours thinking about the work and solving problems, finding better ways to get the job done, seeking out new insights, and then acting on them.
Committed team members are involved, and research states that only 10% of the total employees are fully engaged in their jobs. Rest are either partially involved or not involved. Greater team engagement means accelerated financial returns through increased sales, higher profits, and satisfied customers.
Leaders’ capability to engage their teams is critical to employee engagement to elicit commitment, not compliance. So let’s discuss and find out how can you build team engagement strategies into your leadership development pursuit during the forthcoming OPEN Leadership Drive SIG discourse.

OPEN Islamabad is starting a SIG (Special Interest Group) on the topic of Lean Startup Methodology to help local startups understand the basic principles of lean and its practical implementation.
We believe 90% of startups fail because they do not build what their customers need. Lean Startup Methodology is a technique that helps understand the needs of the customers and reduces the odds of failure.
“Success is not delivering a feature, it is learning how to solve customer’s problem” – Eric Ries, Founder of Lean Startup Methodology”
According to Steve Blank, “a startup is a temporary organization designed to search for a repeatable and scalable business model”, so the faster a startup learns, the lower would be its odds of failure.
This SIG would be run by Awais Naseer who is a Lean evangelist and practitioner for past several years. Awais has helped several local and international startups build dozens of products on lean principles. He is the founder and CEO of Softoven (Pvt.) Ltd., a lean product development agency based out of Islamabad with clients across the world.
Topics to be covered
The first Lean Startup SIG would cover the following topics:
a. Introduction to lean.
b. Why (with some stories) and how?
c. Introduction to lean terms (Prototype, MVP, Pivot etc.).
c. Introduction to Lean Canvas.

One of the toughest challenges for data scientists is the speed at which their queries are processed when they are exploring for patterns in very large data sets. PostgreSQL has not traditionally been designed for such analytics, but the newly added TABLE SAMPLE feature can be exploited to analyze big data very quickly.
